It’s a welcome verdict

A trial court on Monday sentenced all the five convicts to life imprisonment in the 2010 Dhaula Kuan gang rape-cum-abduction case of a call centre employee. Though, late this decision comes as a big relief. The five men were held guilty of abducting the woman, who hailed from the northeast, on November 24, 2010 and then gang-raping her. The woman was walking home with a friend after her work shift ended. The abductors took her to Mangolpuri, gang-raped her, and left her on an isolated road there. The men were later arrested from Mewat in Haryana.

The incident had sent shockwaves among the BPO employees who often have to travel back home during night time. Following the incident, Delhi Police ordered all BPOs in Delhi and the National Capital Region to drop women employees at their home after their shift ends. Though rape law has been strengthened in the country as an outcome of Nirbhay incident, still such incidents are not coming down. Once considered to be the safest place for woman Arunachal has been hit hard by series of rape incidents in recent years. This year alone three cases of rape cum murder have been reported from various parts of the state. Apart from ensuring strong punishment to the perpetrators of such crime, the Arunachalee society as a whole should also introspect and look where things are going wrong. Let us hope that verdict like that of Dhaula Kuan gang rape-cum-abduction case will send strong message to the potential criminals.

Put us on the 'adharsh gaon' map

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I on behalf of people of Debing Village would like to fervently appeal Ninong Ering, Honorable Member of Parliament from 2-Arunachal East Parliamentary Constituency to kindly select Debing village as model village under a new scheme called Saansad Adharsh Gram Yojana(SAGY).

During the 1980s, Rayang, Debing, Depi, Detak, Name and Nari had lost their large parts of agricultural lands to people of Assam due to land encroachments. But till date we have not been compensated for the loss of lands from State Govt in particular and Centre in general. In those days, there had been bitter conflicts between people of Assam and Arunachal over lands as well as interstate boundary line. Those days, in your capacity as the Circle Officer of Nari, you closely witnessed sufferings and miseries of the people of the area. Since then most villagers of the area particularly people of Debing village are rendering lives landless and sustaining lives with great hardship.

Even now people can't live up to normal living standards due to economic causes.

Hence, I on behalf of people of Debing village appeal to you to kindly do something good by selecting Debing village as an 'adharsh gaon' for which we shall always remain indebted to you.

Yours,

Sum Nonang (Apum)

GPC, Debing Village

India should first clean up its own backyard

Dear Editor,

Indian "nationalism" and "patriotism" is presently at its jingoistic best! While our spacecraft is roving the Mars orbit uplifting the country among the elite club of nations, the proud Indians are also sternly asking the Pakistanis and Chinese to behave or get ready for the consequences! Bangla-desh should also not be spared as they are exporting terrorists to West Bengal!

Though we are presently living in best of times as far as nationalism is concerned, our patriotic feelings should be confined only within the narrow sphere of spewing venoms directed towards the alien nations! But if we come across one of our own countrymen boasting of peculiar language/attire/physical features, we hold every democratic right to treat him/her as alien and taunt, abuse or torture him/her both physically as well as psychologically! So Arunachal Pradesh is definitely an integral part of India, but an Arunachalee or a North-Easterner is definitely a "Chinese" and so needs to be thrown out from India - right from Gurgaon to Bangalore!

Actually this country is the paternal property of true Indians only! Now, what is the definition of a true Indian?

True Indian is he/she who speaks in classical languages of South India, in "Rajbhasa" or at least zealously supports the claim of Hindi being the "national language",  rabidly shouts the slogan of 'My India is great'(again in Rashtrabhasa) completely ignoring the hard fact of India's leading position in Global Slavery Index 2013; immerses in the philistinism of Bollywood by discarding the indigenous cultures of heterogeneous India; promptly protests against dishonour of symbols like national anthem and tricolour, but preferring to look the other way when the real nation i.e common Indians get trampled under the ills of poverty, hunger, malnutrition, illiteracy,  bonded labour, communalism, casteism, regionalism and atrocities of all possible hues; flocks to the stadiums to root for the Dhonis and engages in the circus named IPL; treats the overhyped money-monger cricketers as "God" and sweeps the scandals of honour-killings, pogroms, corruption, witch-hunting, untouchability, child labour under the carpet of IT Revolution and Moon/Mars mission! Moreover he/she should render only Urdu-Punjabi-Gujarati-Holi-Dussehra-Bhajan-Ghazal-Biriyani-Dal Makhani-Dosha-Idli-Carnatic music-Bhangra-Garba-Sherwani-Salwar kameez ie all things Northern and little bit of Southern and Western Indian as "national", thereby rendering the traits and culture of rest of the Indians as "provincial" or "laggard"! What an imperialistic mindset prevailing in the country which continuously flaunts of being the "largest democracy" in the world!

And there lies no doubt to the fact that the North-East India remains the greatest victim of such imperialistic mindset because of their Mongoloid features and "sin" of speaking in languages not affiliated to Sanskrit or Dravidian stock. Also supreme indifference and ignorance towards the region have worsened the situation. Why will the "nationalists" from "mainland" care to regard or know about the stalwarts like Dr.Bhupen Hazarika, Jahnu Barua, Mamoni Raisom Goswami, Ratan Thyiam, Guru Bipin Singh, M.C.Mary Kom, the Iron Lady Irom Sharmila or the silent worker named Manik Sarkar! Aren't they the know-all brigade (actually frogs in the well) too engrossed with the Bollywood singers and directors, Shobha De, Habib Tanvir, Birju Maharaj, Sania Mirza, Ramdevs and Hazares, Narendra Modis and Nitish Kumars (I do not harbour any disrespect towards Habib Tanvir or Birju Maharaj, my only point remains that the partial society offers limelight only to the North Indians and few lucky ones from West or South)! As far as ignorance is concerned, I can't blame the rest of the Indians if they remain unaware of greats like Prince Tikendrajit Singh, U Tirot Sing or Rani Gaidinliu. After all the school text books have not taught them about the great revolutionaries from the North-East; the syllabus suggest that only the North Indians like Rani of Jhansi, Bhagat Singh or Jawaharlal Nehru had fought against the British imperialists! But hadn't the "enlightened" brigade gone through their geography books in school which shed light on different states of India and their capitals? Or have the "progressive" lot absolutely forgotten about it? How can the persons, claiming themselves to be "educated", afford to question the exact location of Arunachal Pradesh or ask whether Nagaland is part of the Indian state or not?

Thus it would not be unfair to suggest that there lies something wrong with the Indian education system which might be capable of helping the students to churn out glamorous careers, but fails to broaden their general knowledge and vision. And less said about imparting moral education the better, else we would not have witnessed such imperialistic and racist attitude prevailing in the society.

It is high time school text books, which form the foundation of the society, enlighten the students about historical and cultural aspects of the whole country including the North-East instead of focusing on certain regions only. Stress on moral education should be an urgent priority which will teach the future of the nation to rise above petty barriers of language, caste, religion and country and accord supreme importance to humanity as a whole. And just like the civilized countries of the West; acts of discrimination, physical abuse and passing lewd comments on the basis of one's linguistic, religious or any other divisive credential should not be tolerated a bit and the offenders need to be awarded exemplary punishment.

Unless our own North-Eastern brothers and sisters are accorded adequate dignity, honour and protection in their very own country; India holds absolutely no moral right to accuse Australians as "racist" whenever any stray attack against any Indian gets perpetrated Down Under. Before acting as the self-appointed "conscience" of the world, India should at first clean up its own backyard.

Yours,

Kajal Chatterjee

Rising crime

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to express my grave concern regarding crimes being committed at frequent intervals. It feels really sad to see the rising crimes in our state. What is more awful and surprising to know is the fact that crimes are being committed frequently?

Here, in particular, I like to make a mention of the recent murder and rape case at Ziro. I applaud the police personnel of Ziro for their job done promptly.

It is not a peculiar fact that we encounter conflicts in some way or other in our daily walks of life. What matters is how we deal with such situations.

It is high time that we respond to the call of duty for humanity. We should thrive for a civilised society and harbour for love and peace for all.

Yours,

Nani Taki
